Delaware People First

self-advocateDelaware People First is a self-advocacy organization supported by The Arc of Delaware.

The group was established in 1989 by self-advocates who wanted a forum where they could discuss issues affecting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Members meet on a regular basis to learn about policies and developments in housing, transportation, employment and socialization, and determine the impact of those issues on their lives.

Members of Delaware People First meet in groups throughout the state. New Castle County meetings are usually held on the fourth Tuesday of the month, and Kent County meetings are usually on the fourth Monday. Often, the meetings feature guest speakers who are experts in disability issues. Additionally, members plan group trips throughout the year, such as Washington, D.C. New York City and local theater, to help them grow socially, to learn more about self-advocacy and to have fun together.
