About The Arc

The Arc of Delaware is a non-profit organization of volunteers and staff working together to improve the quality of life for people with cognitive disabilities and their families. We are a chapter of The Arc of the United States. In coordination with other chapters of The Arc around the country, we strive to include all children and adults with cognitive, intellectual and developmental disabilities in every community.

In Delaware, The Arc comprises more than 800 contributing members, staff dedicated to meeting your needs and a Board of Directors which includes families of people with disabilities, individuals with a cognitive disability, professionals in the field and community representatives.

The Arc uses systems advocacy and direct services to help ensure that individuals with disabilities can live, work, go to school and enjoy leisure activities within the community of their choice.

Systems advocacy means that we speak out on government and local issues that affect the rights of persons with disabilities:

  • We monitor services, such as housing, education and health care, to ensure those services meet the needs of persons with disabilities.
  • We testify at public hearings, interview with the press and speak with community groups to break down barriers and encourage "good neighbor" attitudes.
  • We collaborate with other agencies and councils to support public policies that empower people with disabilities.
  • We partner with other organizations to sponsor conferences and training opportunities that promote "best practices" in education, housing and employment.

We provide direct services that give one-on-one assistance to persons with disabilities in the areas of employment , housing , case advocacy and parent mentoring . For more information on these programs, please see Programs & Services .
